"Gaze upon" Campus Art Exhibition: A Wonderful Attempt at the Collision of Science and Art!

"We are all children of the stars, and every cell within us is inscribed with the history of the entire universe. When you gaze upon yourself, you also behold the silhouette of the entire world."

"This is a series of activities centered around the theme 'Universe and Stars' organized by our club, the Science Club. Prior to this, we had the opportunity to experience the beauty of the universe and the romance of the stars through on-site observations of meteor showers and star clusters. Subsequently, we compiled astronomical materials, wrote and edited our own newspaper for the Science Club, further enhancing our systematic understanding of astronomy and physics."

"Initially, we used polymer clay to create the eight planets of our solar system. Members of the G2 XIE class, including myself, participated in the creation of a solar system model as tutees of Ms. Rachel. Although many of us lacked a strong foundation in art, with the assistance of the art department, we united as a team and formed each planet."

"Here, I have not only acquired scientific knowledge and witnessed natural wonders, but also felt a sense of self-worth. Most importantly, the collaboration and teamwork among all members have brought an unprecedented sense of accomplishment to everyone."

"In the midst of our youthful exuberance, let us look up at these stars and see how they shine for you."

On January 25th, 2024, an art exhibition titled "Gaze upon" was held on campus.

This extraordinary exhibition, featuring a combination of installation art, photography, and paintings, revolved around the theme of "The Universe and the Stars," bringing an unprecedented brilliance and beauty to the campus.

What began as a small vision from the Science Club eventually evolved into a collaborative campus event, involving not only the Science Club but also the faculty and students of the school's Art Department, as well as alumni. Countless hours of dedication and hard work were poured into this exhibition by all parties involved, making it a truly remarkable and memorable event.

The exhibition was not just a showcase of artistic talent but also served as a testament to the power of collaboration and the beauty that can emerge when different disciplines, such as science and art, come together. "Gaze upon" left a lasting impression on all who attended, inspiring them to look beyond the ordinary and gaze upon the wonders of the universe and the creativity within each of us.

This scientific art exhibition, "Gaze upon," is an extension of our "Let's Go See a Meteor Shower" event. Our goal is to share the beauty of the starry sky with even more people.

We hope that by looking up, everyone can be inspired to reflect and ponder for a few minutes, or even just for a few seconds, on astrophysics and our place in the universe.

Our science club aims to bring the spirit of science into our daily lives through artistic expressions.

The biggest challenge of this art exhibition, in my opinion, was the combination of Art and Science. Science demands rationality and logic, while Art is an expression of emotion. Therefore, this time I challenged my students to embrace "authenticity" in their emotional expressions.

As a result, some students experimented with innovative materials, incorporating 3D elements to add depth to their paintings. Others used pure black and white to convey a sense of loneliness. Yet others manipulated composition, for instance, by replacing the ground with amber, using reflections and mappings to evoke a sense of beauty and dreaminess.

All these subtle adjustments were made with the aim of fusing Art and Science.

During the curation process, we had envisioned a Window Design that would allow starlight to shine through into the hall, creating a magical atmosphere. However, the black cardboard used for blocking light was unexpectedly heavy, and despite our students' best efforts to hang it up, the final design struggled to achieve the desired effect.

While the Window Design ultimately didn't make it to the exhibition, our Science Club's Activity Department put a lot of heart and effort into it. I believe it was still a valuable experiment and a learning experience.

Every project-based learning initiative in our Science Club offers an alternative to traditional classroom learning and exam-oriented education. In exam-oriented education, students often aim to craft the perfect answer by following a mark scheme. But when it comes to organising a real art exhibition, it's all about harnessing imagination and taking action to bring one's vision to life. I think this is a fantastic exercise for our students.

Challenges and difficulties are inevitable, but they are also integral to our growth. Overcoming obstacles is what makes the process meaningful and complete.

Our original inspiration for this creative endeavor stemmed from the meteor shower observation event organized by our Science Education Club. Two students from our department provided extensive feedback about their experience, expressing their profound amazement at witnessing the genuine phenomenon of a meteor shower.

With the assistance of Ms. Rachel, we were able to gather numerous photographic materials depicting the Leonid meteor shower. Initially, everyone was taken aback by the ethereal beauty of these images, doubting their authenticity as if they had undergone significant post-processing. However, we soon realized that this was the genuine power and beauty of nature, unaltered and breathtaking.

Inspired by this revelation, we made the decision to utilize artistic techniques to attempt to capture and recreate this extraordinary celestial display.
